RETURNING BACK TO MY ROOTS

I am first and foremost a fashion designer. I have been illustrating and occassionally construction garments since the age of 14. When I was 13, my mother relocated my family to the UK. When I arrived in this foreign place, my lecturers informed me that I needed to start preparing for graduation, which was in 2 years. I had to not only relearn the entire English language, but I had to learn French and German, and new histories and concepts... all within 6 months, before my final SATs. To top it all off, I also had to suddenly decide what it was that I wanted to be for the rest of my life. In the USA, it wasn't even a thought as I would have graduated much older over there. But in the UK, the most important decision of my life needed to be decided NOW. It was overwhelming.

I had no idea what I wanted to do... until that day when I was watching the telly with my family. We were watching the evening telly as usual, but on this particular night the BBC2 decided to film a documentary about fashion design. I came across the show as I was flipping between the five channels. At first I was curious, then I was memorized as I watched this Italian design weaving beads in a loom to form a complete gown made out of ruby red crystal beads. I watched so closely as she wove each bead into this loom to form this elegant gown.

Eureak!

My Purpose was Born

All I understood was that I wanted to be like that designer on the telly.

I didn't know where to start, so I went to my career counselor (who told me that I should do business studies). Determined I proceeded to pursue finding a college and studying how to get into this course. I picked up Graphics Design as an extra credit and began drawing my first Fashion Illustrations... which were based off cartoon drawings I would make. My proportions were off, but after constant practice, I finally made designs that I can be proud of.

My grandmother made clothes out of necessity... I wanted to make clothes  to go beyond necessity but for desire.

Daughma Apparel is in the process of being born. When this unique line officially launches, it will be a statement of its own.  Just as my art and jewelry designs are statements.

Below are a couple of surviving pictures of fashion designs from my youth. Subscribe to this site to be kept up to date about the progress of this project.
